![]() Boorman said that he wanted to make a "metaphyiscal thriller" more than a horror film, and wanted it to be positive and uplifting to contrast with what he saw as the darkness and ugliness of The Exorcist. There's a lot of weird and interesting imagery- brown fields against blood red skies, flying locusts, a medical institute full of glass walls, hynotic devices with flashing lighbulbs, James Earl Jones dressed as a shaman. A good description of it would be that it's a kind of anti-Exorcist- whereas The Exorcist has an atmosphere of documentary realism in order to make its supernatural events more credible, Exorcist II is trippy and surreal and operates on a kind of dream logic. ![]() ![]() It's a really unique and interesting film, but it was made by a director who despised The Exorcist (1973) and wanted to make a film that was its opposite in every way. Yes, but you need to know what kind of film you're getting into.
